Overview

Whitman completed the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering and special systems (information technology, security, etc.) design services to convert an existing school building on Governors Island for Spaceworks. The space will be transformed into 43 visual artist studios, one large rehearsal/performance space and a central common area that will include a small kitchen, seating and exhibition area.

The existing building’s services were antiquated and the design included new electrical, domestic water and sanitary services to the building from the new island’s infrastructure. Whitman coordinated with the architect and civil engineer of record to locate the service connections as well as the new equipment and piping throughout the building.
