Whitman is currently seeking a Full-Time Environmental Compliance Associate to support our environmental, health & safety compliance division based out of our Somerset, NJ office. The ideal candidate must possess a positive attitude, have outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities, and work well in a team-oriented environment.  Candidate must have the ability to coordinate office activities and operations to secure efficiency and compliance with company policies.

Responsibilities: 

  • Ensuring that Whitman’s clients follow and adhere to all applicable environmental laws and regulations including air and water pollution, chemical use, and emissions.
  • Performing inspections of industrial sites and investigating various sources of pollution to protect and ensure the safety of local communities, including their health and ensuring that companies comply and adhere to federal and state environmental laws, as well as local regulations and procedures on pollution.
  • Reading reports, analyzing aerial photographs, examining and identifying potential violations, documenting findings, and collecting waste, water, and soil samples in order to critically analyze them.
  • Performing investigative duties, which involve reviewing and investigating complaints of suspected violations of pollution control laws, which may include the illegal dumping of wastes and excessive emissions.
  • Creating/modifying environmental plans and permits required at client sites including, but not limited to, air, water, wastewater, non-hazardous and hazardous waste.
  • Training client employees on environmental, health and safety policies and best practices.
  • Conducting inspections and identifying hazards and EHS violations.
  • Providing solutions and intervention strategies for hygiene, health, and safety hazards.
  • Implementing new health and safety protocols and measures to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Monitoring operational processes and employee activities, including sampling for noise, chemical exposure, and indoor air quality issues.
  • Generating assessment documentation, incident and accident reports, and health and safety manuals.
  • Reporting to client management, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies, as needed.
  • Preparing and submitting health and safety compliance documents to the relevant organizations.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest EHS trends, policies, regulations, and best practices.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, safety management, or similar.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience preferred
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written
  • Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated, independent, results-oriented, adept at multi-tasking effectively, and able to re-prioritize as required
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and eagerness to learn
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds at times
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the entire body. This will include climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, carrying, and stooping
  • Must be able to work in all outdoor weather conditions
  • Must be able to work some weekends and at night, when needed
