Overview
Whitman recently assisted with the completion of the Forbes Street Solar Project II (FSSPII) on a former landfill site in East Providence, Rhode Island. Phase I of the project was completed back in 2013, where Whitman assisted with the preparation of plans and specifications for the capping of the landfill, including responsibility over navigating the township and state approval processes.
Phase II was completed at the end of November 2018, where Whitman again served as a project manager to oversee design, permitting and development stages. The solar array was operational by the end of 2018.
Project Impact
This project, capable of generating 3 MW of energy, will contribute to the governor’s goal to grow Rhode Island’s clean energy supply tenfold–to 1,000 MW–by 2020. The project will also help further reduce the state’s greenhouse-gas emissions and serve nearly 500 RI households. Repurposing a closed landfill to generate clean energy makes use of an underutilized space, creates new revenue streams for the city, and sets a great example for other states to follow.
