Project at a Glance
  • Whitman was retained to complete a study and application for a mine deepening permit for a client in Wilkes Barre, PA.
  • Whitman installed wells at the site and completed water quality monitoring as well as stream flow data.
  • Whitman’s approach using actual data instead of computer modeling will allow the ability to predict future requirements.

Overview

Whitman directed the installation of several monitoring wells on the client’s property to characterize the water quality. The data collected was utilized to develop a Hydrogeologic Report. This report provided an estimate of the pumping required to deepen the quarry and provided a discussion of the potential effects on the hydrogeological balance:

  • Recommendations and conclusions regarding the potential impacts to groundwater;
  • Conclusions with regards to whether pumped water will be discharged.

Traditionally, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) required computer modeling to determine this information. Whitman’s approach provided actual data which was used to predict future requirements.
