Overview

Whitman provided environmental services for this former manufacturing facility located in Teterboro, New Jersey.

Under this ISRA case, Whitman identified over 10 areas of concern (AOCs), which included underground storage tanks (USTs), surface discharges, subsurface discharge systems, neutralization tank, and storm sewers.  Most of the AOCs identified were associated with former blueprint manufacturing operations. These AOCs were investigated and remediated.  The USTs addressed included chemical storage, gasoline and heating oil tanks.

Whitman discovered the presence of a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) consisting primarily of chlorinated solvents at the property.  Based on the Whitman team’s experience and knowledge base, the DNAPL was successfully investigated without creating pathways for further spread of material.

Whitman successfully removed a majority of the free DNAPL and addressed the remainder with in situ remediation followed by encapsulation of any residual material.  In situ remediation activities included construction of a slurry wall and pilot studies of alternative remedial methods.

Remediation of this area included demolition and restoration of a portion of the building overlying the area.  The remediation program negotiated with the NJDEP resulted in case closure at significant cost savings over conventional remedial methods.

This project proved to be one of the largest discharges of free chlorinated solvents in New Jersey.
