Overview

Whitman provided materials characterization sampling services to assist with the demolition of a former industrial smokestack approximately 150 feet tall. The project site is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and known as the Dobson Mills complex, which is being redeveloped for luxury residential use.

The construction contractor, based in Philadelphia, was tasked with demolishing the stack and reclaiming the red brick for other uses. Whitman provided sampling and analysis of the brick and mortar of the stack prior to the material being shipped out from the site in bulk.

The site is a historic industrial complex and recorded as a national historic district located in the Hunting Park Industrial Area of Philly. The structures that encompass the complex were built between 1858 and 1928, and range from two to five stories in height. The stack was once associated with a coal-fired furnace that helped to power blanket, overcoat and wool yarn production facilities, a carpet mill and a plush mill. The Dobson Mills complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
