Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of thousands of synthetic chemicals used to make products resistant to water, heat, and stains. These substances are often considered “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment and are overall difficult to destroy.

Because of their widespread use in consumer, commercial, and industrial products, many PFAS substances can be found in the blood of people and animals all over the world, as well as present at low levels in a variety of food products and the overall environment.
