Historically, underground and above ground storage tanks (USTs and ASTs) have been used to store fuel oil to heat buildings, or to power emergency generators or boilers. Over time however, many these tanks have corroded and leaked their contents, resulting in contamination of surrounding soil and groundwater, and significantly impacting the value of properties.

Understanding and applying the regulatory requirements involved in the investigation and closure of these storage tank systems can prove complicated.  If you are a tank owner or a property buyer, you may find yourself asking these questions:

  • What is the difference between a regulated and an unregulated storage tank?
  • What do I do if I find an underground storage tank during site development?
  • What do I do if I’ve confirmed a release from a UST?
  • If I have a release do I always have to test ground water?
  • What happens if the soil and ground water results are below the NJDEP Standards?
  • What happens if the soil and ground water results are above the NJDEP Standards?

We Can Help

Whitman has extensive experience with the management of underground and aboveground storage tanks. Our staff of highly trained professionals has the expertise to assess the situation and recommend the required work from a simple removal and replacement to the most complex remediation.

We are fully insured and Certified by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to perform all facets of tank removals, remediation and NJDEP reporting. We will work with you to review financial cost recovery options through your insurance company or other funding sources (i.e. grants) available to lessen the financial burden of your tank project.

Whitman is an Unregulated Heating Oil Tank Certified (UHOT) Contractor/Consultant, which allows for our staff to remediate a leaking underground storage tank and rapidly move the case to closure with the NJDEP. We will handle the entire project including the submission of permit applications, site investigations, completion of any remediation, and preparation/submittal of any NJDEP reports should a leaking tank be discovered, to obtain a “No Further Action” letter from the NJDEP.

Our staff of Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs) can provide the oversight required to issue the case closure document or Response Action Outcome (RAO) for Regulated USTs.
