Location: Somerset, NJ

Whitman is currently seeking a Solar Project Design Engineer with 2-5 years of experience to support our Somerset, NJ Engineering Department. As a Solar Project Design Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of solar energy systems. The individual will work closely with clients, project managers, and construction teams to ensure the successful deployment of solar projects from conception through to completion. The role will include technical design, system modeling, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and Development:
    • Develop detailed solar system designs, including photovoltaic (PV) panel layout, electrical schematics, and system integration.
    • Use design software (e.g., AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope) to create accurate system models and simulations.
    • Optimize solar designs to maximize energy production and efficiency while minimizing costs.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure designs comply with local, state, and national regulations and standards, including building codes and interconnection requirements.
  • Technical Support:
    • Provide technical support during the installation phase of solar projects.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation for design processes, system specifications, and project reports.
  • Innovation and Improvement:
    • Stay updated with the latest advancements in solar technology and industry trends.
    • Recommend and implement improvements to design processes and system performance.

Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field.  A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., NABCEP Solar PV Installer Certification) is a plus.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in solar project design, including hands-on experience with solar PV systems and design software.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in design and simulation software (e.g., AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope).
    • Strong understanding of solar technology, electrical systems, and energy production.
    • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and regulations related to solar energy and electrical systems.
    • Understanding of environmental and sustainability principles related to renewable energy.

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment with occasional site visits and fieldwork.
  • Some travel may be required to project sites.
