Whitman’s Engineering Division has decades of experience in the design of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) and Fire Protection Systems, specializing in solutions to maximize building performance and energy efficiency.
Our engineers have successfully designed high efficiency HVAC, boiler, plumbing, lighting and fire protection and life safety systems for a wide variety of clients, including developers, office and corporate spaces, retail stores, restaurants, schools, universities, correctional facilities, laboratories, hotels, theaters, data centers and health care facilities.
Whitman’s Engineering staff includes licensed Professional Engineers in numerous states. In addition, Whitman has Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals on staff. Our engineers are experienced and knowledgeable in LEED principles and have been part of multiple design teams where LEED and sustainable design principles have been incorporated into project designs.

Eddie Alonso, PE, CEM, LEED AP
Senior Vice President of Operations
Eddie is Whitman’s Senior Vice President of Operations, and is responsible for the direction and growth of the firm’s Environmental and Engineering Divisions. He has over 25 years of design and project management experience, including multi-discipline projects in various market sectors such as commercial, pharmaceutical, industrial, laboratories, and higher education. He has significant experience in fire protection, plumbing, HVAC design and controls, as well as energy modeling and auditing for mechanical systems. Eddie holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Illinois, Virginia, Rhode Island, Florida, Minnesota, South Carolina and Hawaii; a Certified Energy Manager; and a LEED Accredited Professional.
Jeffrey Thoens, PE, LEED AP BD+C
Director of Engineering
Jeff is Whitman’s Director of Engineering, overseeing the firm’s multi-discipline Engineering Division. He has over 20 years of experience working in the engineering field and has been a member of the Whitman team for over 10 years. Jeff’s project experience includes design and project management of multi-discipline projects in various market sectors including: photovoltaic solar projects; healthcare facilities; municipal facilities; K-12 school projects; high education projects; food processing facilities; retail including big box stores and super markets; and more. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering Technology from Vermont Technical College. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Vermont, as well as a LEED Accredited Professional.
Gary Fields, PE
Project Manager
Gary serves as Project Manager on Whitman’s MEP Engineering Team. He is responsible for the design and management of mechanical projects in various market sectors. He prepares mechanical design work including heating and cooling load calculations, equipment selections, and general mechanical system layouts utilizing AutoCAD MEP. He also investigates existing field equipment for improvements in efficiency and service life. Gary is proficient in HVAC design including air systems and hydronics. Additional responsibilities include field surveys with clients, code review, report writing and construction administrative tasks including submittal and shop drawings reviews and punchlist inspections. Gary holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey State Institute of Technology. Gary is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey.
