Civil and Geotechnical Engineering
Engineering design and management go hand in hand with environmental quality in
providing and assuring sustainable development for the well being and enhancement of
future generations. Particularly in the older, intensively developed industrial
northeast almost all-future growth will focus on restoration and redevelopment of our
cities, industrial complexes, transportation arteries and infrastructure networks.
Contact Barry Skoultchi, P.E. to
discuss the following elements of Whitman's Civil and Geotechnical Engineering
Capabilities.
Survey and Evaluation
Engineering excellence begins with a thorough understanding of the setting and the
conditions upon which new construction is founded.
The Whitman Companies, Inc. conducts detailed subsurface surveys and prepares
geotechnical subsurface reports for clients to determine what types of foundations are
required to support structures slated for construction. Subsurface evaluations are
based upon the drilling of borings, coring of bedrock, soil classification analysis
through laboratory testing, Atterberg limits, pentrometer testing, sieve analysis and
moisture content testing. Geotechnical subsurface survey reports confirm the
viability of a client's foundation selection, and presents alternatives, if necessary, to
enable foundations to be designed in accordance with prevailing subsurface conditions.
Whitman performs site development evaluations to assess the overall potential for
construction on a site, including foundations and geotechnical character, utilities and
infrastructure, drainage, runoff and erosion control, and environmental character
including soil and ground water contamination and wetlands.
Design
Whitman's design capabilities enable us to undertake engineering design of our client's
facilities including:
- Foundations
- Floor slabs
- Retaining walls
- Drainage systems, retention ponds, detention basins
- Stream and wetland restoration systems
- Utility systems, including pump stations
- Chemical and bulk fuel containment systems
- Aboveground storage tank systems
- Landfill containment systems
- Leachate collection systems
- Impermeable caps/engineering controls on contaminated sites
Construction Oversight
Engineers at The Whitman Companies, Inc. provide field oversight during the
construction phase of a client's project. While these services are normally rendered
for projects where Whitman performed the engineering design, we are also available for
oversight services on construction projects where the design was performed by others.
Design/Build
Whitman is available and interested in teaming with construction contractors on
design/build projects. Contact Barry Skoultchi,
P.E. or Dr. Ira L. Whitman, P.E.
