Elizabeth, New Jersey
Project at a Glance:
- Major distribution center Portsfield project in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
- Whitman worked with the developer to assess and remediate the environmental issues of an abandoned chemical plant.
- Issues included soil contamination, ground water contamination and wetlands impacts.
- When completed, the redevelopment will include approximately 1 MM ft2 of Class A Warehousing/Distribution.
- Project is being managed through the NJDEP’s Office of Brownfield Reuse.
This project has been designated as one of the original Portsfield Projects by the States of NJ and NY and will transform an abandoned chemical plant into a Class A distribution facility.
In addition, low value wetlands will be remediated and mitigated into one of the only remaining “green” areas in the Newark Bay region. The updated wetlands will include access to the Newark Bay and provide access to approximately 3/4 miles of greenway upstream of the redeveloped Brownfield site.
Through the use of standard remedial technologies (i.e., excavation) as well as advanced remedial technologies (chemical oxidation/reduction and bioremediation), Whitman was instrumental in reducing the estimated remedial cost by $3-4 million.
Through their relationship with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Whitman was able to fast track the necessary approvals for remediation and wetlands mitigation.
