MBNA Deerfield Facility

Newark, Delaware

Project at a Glance:

  • Design and construction oversight of approximately 7,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer system for a major bank facility in Newark, Delaware.
  • Whitman prepared the permit applications necessary to rehabilitate the sewer system, which were submitted to the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), the New Castle County Department of Land Use, and the Delaware State Historic Preservation Office for approvals.

Project History

The MBNA Deerfield Facility, formerly owned by Dupont, has been plagued for the past several years with sanitary sewer maintenance problems resulting in blockages due to pipe failure. An evaluation was performed consisting of a complete cleaning and television-video recorded inspection of all site sanitary sewer piping and related manholes. The overall evaluation of the system indicated that the system was in very poor condition and in desperate need of complete restoration.

Investigation

Whitman and its subcontractors performed a survey of the existing sanitary sewer system with manholes along with a topographic and environmental wetlands survey of the project corridor for design and permitting purposes. Based on environmental site investigations, there are freshwater wetlands located along the project corridor that are subject to mitigation following construction. The survey for design and permitting included:

  • Survey for horizontal and vertical alignment of the sewer system.
  • Inspection of the manholes to verify the bottom of the pipe and correct pipe size and type.
  • Prepare plan and profile drawings of the existing sanitary sewer system for permitting.

Rehabilitation

The proposed work involved replacement of approximately 7,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer pipe, eleven (11) new manholes, and raising the elevation of five (5) manholes.

Whitman is performing the construction management services for the installation of the new sanitary sewer system, which is anticipated to be complete by spring 2002. The estimated construction costs are $1 million with Whitman's design and construction oversight estimated at $125,000.
